LISTEN: Keith Urban’s New Single “Blue Ain’t Your Color”

Keith Urban has dropped another single from his “Ripcord” album, and Keith says it’s inspired by his late father’s love for Don Williams.

From The Boot,

“Blue Ain’t Your Color” was written by Steven Lee Olsen, Hillary Lindsey and Clint Lagerberg and co-produced by Dann Huff and Urban. The simple, slow track finds Urban telling a dejected girl sitting alone in a bar, “You don’t need that guy / It’s so black and white / He’s stealin’ your thunder / Baby, blue ain’t your color.”

“I just don’t understand / How another man / Can take your sun / And turn it ice cold,” the country star continues, pulling out a blues-y guitar riff near the end of the tune, which readers can press play above to hear.

Urban admits his father, Robert “Bob” Urban, who passed away in December — specifically, his dad’s affinity for Don Williams — influenced the song.

“[T]hat kind of strong downbeat, backbeat and little in-between rhythmic thing that is very, very Don Williams … really informed so much of how I play and how I rhythmically approach records,” Urban tells The Boot. “[“Blue Ain’t Your Color”] is a very, very stark, minimalistic way of recording, which really comes from those records that Don and Garth Fundis did …
“Don also had that attitude, too, like, the song is the picture, and the record is the frame. You’ve got to find the right frame, not too much and not too little, to make the picture really work,” Urban adds. “So for the songs that don’t need much, like “Blue Ain’t Your Color,” my dad’s record collection obviously has informed that a lot.”
