The Seattle Sounders and Head Coach Sigi Schmid announced they’ve mutually parted ways. It is an abrupt end for the only coach in Sounders FC history. Since 2009, Schmid has led the franchise to the second best winning percentage in Major League Soccer, and won four US Open Cup titles, the MLS Supporters Shield and seven consecutive MLS Cup Playoff appearances.

The Seattle Seahawks reached an agreement on a contract extension with coach Pete Carroll that will run through 2019. Carroll, who’s led the team to two Super Bowls – including a victory over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII – was about to enter the final year of his contract.

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge was a major social media craze two summers ago, to help raise money and awareness for Lou Gehrig’s disease. The campaign was wildly successful and attracted donations from the likes of Oprah, LeBron James, Bill Gates and many other celebrities. Nationally, 2.5 million people donated $115 million to the ALS Association.Now, scientists have announced a potential breakthrough, thanks to all of the money that was raised. A just-released study from the University of Massachusetts Medical School has uncovered a new gene behind ALS cases.

Who would have thought that the Smithsonian could turn getting drunk into an amazing job? It’s a strange new world we live in. The Smithsonian is doing research into American craft beer, so they’re going to hire someone to travel around for the next three years to drink beer, talk to brewers, and file reports. And they’re paying $64,650 a year, plus benefits. Anyone can apply, but they do say they want someone who has a, quote, “advanced degree” in history, food, brewing, culture, or business.
