FBI Ends Active D.B. Cooper Investigation

It’s one of the most famous stories in the Northwest, the tale of D.B. Cooper. A mysterious man, who hijacked a plane in 1971 between Seattle and Portland, stole $200,000 (approximately $1,170,000 in 2015) and jumped out the back in a suit and tie with a parachute. Somewhere around 1980, stacks of money were found with the matching serial numbers to those that “D.B.” stole from the flight. However, no sign of the perpetrator has ever been found.

The FBI recently announced that after 45 years, and exhausting all leads, it has concluded that it will redirect resources to other priorities. However, the following statement was released:

“Although the FBI will no longer actively investigate this case, should specific physical evidence emerge—related specifically to the parachutes or the money taken by the hijacker—individuals with those materials are asked to contact their local FBI field office.”
